With the start of a new school year, the student news site for MHS has a new name, the “Cardinal Connection.” The site was formerly known as “The Banner News.”

The rebranding of “The Banner News” started early last school year. The news and AV production teams started forming ideas for new brand names and logos. After several meetings and brainstorming sessions, the staff settled on the name. The staff voted for “Cardinal Connection” because it showcases community and school spirit.

“This is my fourth year at MHS, and no one seems to know how the original name ‘The Banner News’ came to be,” news adviser Rachel Nelson said. “As we discussed in class, ‘The Banner News’ sounds more appropriate for a traditional print publication, but we don’t have that anymore. Our publication is a website, and we want to show that we’re growing and changing with the times, and that we’re more connected to our school.”

Two senior staff members attended a workshop along with the adviser Nelson this summer, and the three of them collaborated to design the new logo.

They also began working on a new layout for the website, which is clean and fresh. It offers simple access to new stories and updates that staff and students need to be aware of.

The staff has also added new social media platforms, so students, parents and the community can always be included and informed.

Not only did the website rebrand, but several new members have joined the “Cardinal Connection” team. From freshmen to senior staff members, each one brings a different personality, which adds to the creative and diverse news site.
