David Broom is a world history teacher and basketball coach, who is new to the high school this year. He has been with Melissa for some time and enjoys teaching and coaching here. Here’s what he had to say about what got him into coaching and teaching.

“I’ve wanted to teach and coach since college,” Broom said. “I majored in a history degree, and I’ve wanted to be around basketball every day.”

Every teacher has something they like in particular about their job or profession, here’s Broom’s.

“I enjoy being around kids, seeing what the future is going to look like through students and teaching them,” he said.

Being a teacher and a coach can get difficult sometimes, especially with managing time. After all, both are quite demanding careers when chosen together.

“The only difficult thing is time,” Broom said. “There are some [days] you get here at 6 a.m. and leave at 10 p.m. on game days. Especially when you have a family, it can get tough.”

Every career comes with inspiration and determination. Broom had it planned out from the beginning.
“[Coaching] is what I wanted to do from the very beginning,” he said. “The reason I wanted to teach was so I could coach anyway. I found out I wanted to do it in college.”

He’s known basketball for quite some time, as well.

“This is my 11th year of coaching and I also played basketball in high school,” he said.

Even though he coaches and teaches full time, he has some other hobbies apart from the usual school business.

“I like to golf, also hanging out with my kids, taking them to parks, just spending time with them,” Broom said.

From a coach’s perspective, here’s what Broom enjoys most about his job.

“[I] just like seeing kids succeed, seeing the end result of working hard and dedicating yourself, not even winning your last game, but getting to a point to work and put in habits to be successful, not just in basketball, but in life,” he said.
