May signifies the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, which commemorates the history and culture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders within the U.S.

The term AAPI includes any individual with roots from the entirety of Asia and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

Throughout history, AAPI persons have faced an abundance of racism, xenophobia and intolerance. In past years, there has been a drastic increase in discrimination toward Asians. About 9,000 anti-Asian incidents have been reported since 2021, translating to a rise of over 300%. These changes can be linked to the start of COVID-19, as it became a vessel for hate toward the AAPI community.

Now more than ever, it is imperative that we recognize and pay tribute to the impact Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made on the history and culture within the U.S. Simply honoring their heritage can be the first step to embracing May as AAPI Heritage Month.
