September 8, 2022
Today, Sept. 8, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96, ending her reign of 70 years and seven months. Her reign was the longest in the history of the United Kingdom, going through countless historical events and through 14 US presidents.
She died with her family around her, as they had been called over to Balmoral Castle earlier today because of health concerns for the queen. Charles III, formerly Prince of Wales, is now the new King of England. His coronation date is currently to be determined.
King Charles released the following statement:
“The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty, The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” Charles said. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.”
