The theatre department will debut their fall musical “Matilda” beginning Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Melissa Arts Center.

The show tells the story of Matilda Wormwood (Alyssa Sabo), a brilliant young girl with a wonderful imagination. Matilda is ignored by her cruel parents but is very loved by her school teacher Miss Honey (Halle Heywood). Although Matilda loves Miss Honey, her first year at school is not all smooth sailing. Her evil headmistress Miss Agatha Trunchbull (Makenna Worsham-Bowen) hates children and loves punishing those who don’t abide by the rules. Matilda’s incredible courage and cleverness alongside her classmates could be the school’s saving grace.

“Getting the chance to do this show has meant so much to me,” sophomore Halle Heywood said. “I love the cast, and I am so thankful for the directors for giving me such a blessed opportunity. My character is so sweet and has so much depth, and it has been so fun getting to play her on stage.”

The story of Matilda is a lot more critical than most people think.

“Matilda’s story is so important because it shows kids that no matter where they come from, they can achieve amazing things, and they are deserving of love,” sophomore Alyssa Sabo said. “Matilda’s character is important because she is so unique and smart. She shows little girls that they are special in their own way; they don’t have to live in other people’s shadows. You hear all the time, and especially with girls, that they should be seen and not heard. Matilda stands up for what is right, and I think it’s important for kids to see.”

Halle, Alyssa and the rest of the cast members will be performing on stage Nov. 10, 12, 17, and 19 with all shows starting at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online here.
