FIFA World Cup kicks off Nov. 20
November 16, 2022
With the month of October behind, November comes in with much excitement. On Nov. 20, the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar, with the host country playing Ecuador in the Al Bayt stadium in Qatar. The World Cup will take place from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18, where teams from all over the world compete to win the title of FIFA World Cup Champions. And for those who play and follow soccer, it’s the most exciting month all year.
Obviously, with an event so big, there’s bound to be an abundance of competition, and many are already betting and routing for their countries to win.
“It’s going to be entertaining,” freshman Dylan Leszka said. “I’m excited to watch it. I’m personally rooting for Poland.”
Although friendly competition between countries can bring tension, that’s not what the World Cup is about. It’s about bringing countries from all over the world to compete in one place and unite many different backgrounds under one event.
“The world will discover Qatar, and that is what football is about–to bring people together,” Gianni Infantino, the current president of FIFA, said in May 2019 when the Qatar location was first announced.
The groups for the upcoming World Cup have been confirmed. Each group was decided based on the FIFA world rating, chosen by skill and qualification points.
“There’s no easy groups in the World Cup,” Hansi Flick, manager of the Germany team, said in April about the World Cup Draw. “They’ve all got their strengths. We’ll take it as it is.”
With all of this in mind, many are highly anticipating this worldwide event happening very soon. What also stands out about this World Cup is that it’s the first World Cup held in the Arab world and the most expensive World Cup ever hosted, with the total cost of the event to be at an estimated $220 billion.
“In all cases, we are continuing with our preparations to host a unique edition of the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and ensuring that it is a tournament of innovation, hospitality and legacy,” Nassar Al-Khater, CEO of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, said.
