On Monday, Dec. 5, the Spirit Council hosted the first Holiday Movie Night in the auditorium of the Melissa Arts Center (MAC). It was a showing of Home Alone. Students wore holiday PJ’s and some brought family members. In addition, hot cocoa and snacks were served before the movie.

This movie night was something that could become an annual event at the high school. The school does not have a winter dance, so a holiday movie night is an opportunity to bring students together and experience some holiday cheer.

“I think this can be a tradition here at MHS,” Spirit Council sponsor Brett Gustaveson said. “It was well attended, and there were lots of students with families and siblings there. Everyone seemed to have a really good time, so I would like to see this happen yearly.”

The movie night was planned mainly by the students on the Spirit Council for the past few weeks. Junior Hudson Ross helped significantly with the setup in the MAC.

“We first had to reserve the auditorium with the fine arts staff, and then we had to decide what movie we were going to watch,” Ross said. “We polled the students with several options and Home Alone was the eventual winner. Student council representatives were in charge of snacks and hot chocolate and I was in charge of setting up all the technology for the night.”

In addition to the planning and preparation that went into the evening, many of the attendees agreed it could become an annual event.

“I do think holiday movie nights should become a tradition,” junior Scout Burrus said. “It’s such a fun idea and it gives everyone an opportunity to get together and celebrate together. Plus, we have amazing facilities for a good movie night.”

Overall, it was a success with a large turnout and could be an event for students to enjoy for years to come.

“I think it was a fun event that people could just show up for,” Student Council sponsor Amy Tyner said. “No competition, no pressure, no stress; strictly fun.”
