The American Sign Language (ASL) classes welcomed nine elementary students from Sherman ISD’s Deaf Education program, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, on Oct. 27.
“I enjoyed hanging out and talking with each of the Sherman kids because it allowed us to have fun moments, regardless of the language barrier,” junior Joshua Fine, a third-year ASL student, said. “My favorite memory was when both the ASL students and Sherman kids lined up for a short race. Even though the results were closer than I’d admit, it was still by far the highlight of both the trip and my day.”
ASL teacher Amy Diaz and her students spent four class periods, including lunch, with Sherman ISD Deaf Ed students. They completed a Halloween Catapult project, took a tour of the campus, ate pizza, read books, and received a surprise visit from the mascot, Birdie!
“I really enjoyed playing games with the kids,” junior Akshaya Ponugoti, a third-year ASL student, said. “My favorite memory is when Birdie surprised them. Seeing all of them so excited was truly worth the effort we put into it.”
