At Melissa High School, a compelling narrative has unfolded as Kyle Brenner has transitioned from coaching University Interscholastic League (UIL) debate in 2010 to spearheading the technical theater department, shaping the school’s artistic landscape.
Originally recruited for UIL debate coaching, Mr. Brenner discovered a passion for technical theater and, over time, became a versatile educator, even delving into teaching subjects like English. However, his heart remained firmly within the intricate workings of the theater, a journey ignited by the influential Mr. Smith, his high school debate coach and director, with whom he later collaborated at Princeton.
Navigating the challenges of technical theater, Mr. Brenner underscores the priority of safety, citing his unease despite the school’s stellar safety record.
Pre-show jitters are part of the routine for Mr. Brenner, wishing for more time and opportunities as each performance looms. Post-show, exhaustion sets in, with a sigh of relief as the demanding 60-80 hour workweeks revert to the standard 40.
Reflecting on a pivotal moment during a one-man show where lights were forgotten, Mr. Brenners recalls not only winning the competition but securing a remarkable second place at nationals, showcasing resilience and adaptability in the theatrical world.
Mr. Brenner lives by the mantra from “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”: “Be excellent to each other.” It encapsulates his philosophy, believing that cultivating kindness creates a more benevolent world.
In the unfolding chapters of Mr. Brenner’s journey, we witness the transformative power of the arts and the commitment to excellence, both on and off the stage.
