The 66th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony was held on Feb. 4. Surprisingly, Phoebe Bridgers took home four awards–the most of the night. Sza, who was nominated for nine awards, took home three, and so did boygenius Killer Mike and Victoria Monét. Miley Cyrus won her first two awards, one of which included “Record of the Year,” and finally, Taylor Swift won “Album of the Year” for “Midnights,” making her the first artist in history to claim four of those prizes.
Of course, it wouldn’t be the Grammys without some drama and show-stopping news. Jay-Z took the opportunity to call out the Recording Academy while accepting his Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. He pointed out that his wife Beyonce has won more Grammys than any other artist yet has never won “Album of the Year,” which seems to be an ongoing snub to Black artists.
Taylor Swift surprised the audience by unexpectedly introducing her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” after receiving the award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
“I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out April 19th,” Taylor said.
Many people criticized Taylor for her actions at the ceremony, particularly from when she won AOTY. When walking to accept her award, Taylor brought singer Lana Del Rey on stage with her, who was featured on a song from “Midnights.” However, many fans claim that Lana looked uncomfortable and hesitant to take the stage with her, as she was also nominated for the same category and, of course, lost.
In lighter news, many people got a kick out of Miley’s performance of her hit song “Flowers.” The singer was dressed in homage to Tina Turner and even added a rock-rendition of “Flowers” at the end.
“Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?” Miley comically yelled after noticing the dull crowd.
