UIL Academics crosses finish line for ’23-’24 season

The UIL Theater, Debate and Academic teams finished their season with a bang.

One Act Play finished in 5th place at the 5A state contest in Austin on May 17 with their production of “This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing.” Senior Bailey Thornburg and junior Halle Heywood as Carmen and Beatrix received All-Star Cast Awards, and senior Kolby Schulz and junior Avery Greene as Father and Albienne received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast Awards.

The Computer Applications Team brought home a couple of state medals. Senior Tyler Mathieson placed 1st for the third consecutive year at the state meet, scoring the highest score in 1A-6A. Senior Ira Roy also made a return trip to the state meet in Computer Applications and finished in 4th place.

The Speech and Debate team also medaled. In Persuasive Speaking, senior Andrew Nager placed 2nd, and in Informative Speaking, junior Sarah Orejuela finished 5th and sophomore Lillian Nabors, 6th.

With the combined points from the state medalists in Academics, Theatre, Film and Robotics, Melissa High School was named the 2024 5A UIL State Second Runner-Up!

Sarah is a junior, and this is her first year writing for the Cardinal Connection. She serves as Captain of the Speech sector for the Speech and Debate team and is an active member of the track team, National Honor Society and Student Council. In her spare time, Sarah appreciates a spine-tingling murder mystery or a sweet romance novel, watching "The Big Bang Theory" with her brother and engaging in creative writing.
