Coming off a successful 2023 varsity football season, fans have high expectations for another great one.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals lost in their home opener at Coach Kenny Deel Stadium on August 31. They took on the Arkansas 5A state champions, Parkview, and fell short, 20-27.
In week two, the Cardinals traveled to the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco to challenge Frisco High School. They easily won the non-district game, 52-13.
On Sept. 13, in week three, the Cardinals kicked off their first district match, hosting Frisco Memorial at home and defeating them 66-6.
Traveling to Toyota Stadium for week four, the Cardinals easily beat yet another Frisco team, Liberty, 70-13, on Sept. 19, improving their overall record to 3-1 and district record to 2-0.
The Cardinals’ real tests for the district title are coming up in the next couple of weeks when they face off against the reigning 4A state champs, Anna, on Sept. 27, who moved up to class 5A this year. Then, on Oct. 4, the Cardinals will travel to Lovejoy to take on their rival.
Varsity has a BYE week on Oct. 11 and then will have their annual homecoming game on Oct. 18 against Frisco Independence. Their final three district games will be against Frisco Emerson (Oct. 25), Walnut Grove (11/1) and Denison (11/7) before they, hopefully, begin a long playoff run.
