Texas House Bill 1481, also known as the “Texas Phone Ban Law,” prohibits schools in Texas from using personal communication devices during school hours, such as cell phones, laptops, smart watches, etc. This bill has significantly impacted all students. The impact has been different for students, staff and parents.
Sophomore Shri Dhrithi Sreekishnan says she didn’t miss her phone that much because it was put away.
“I’m making a lot more real-life interactions with my friends and enjoying life more,” Sreekishnan said.
In addition, the bill has allowed her to be more connected with her friends rather than social media.
Another sophomore, Jacob Burns, explains how he feels anxious because he isn’t able to check his grades with a click of a button.
“But…I’m noticing that I’m socializing a lot more than I usually do,” Burns said.
Also, Burns believes that they should be allowed to use their phones during free time, like passing periods, lunch, and advisory.
CTE Teacher Karla Romero believes the ban is ineffective and strict policies should be enforced on when students can use their phones, rather than banning them.
“I don’t think it’s realistic…I don’t think it’s preparing students for the real world,” Romero said.
Lastly, a parent, Ramya Sapthagiri, believes that this bill will help her kids focus more in school, but she’s worried about their safety because she can’t communicate with them throughout the school day.
“My main concern is not being able to get in touch with my kid,” Sapthagiri said.
Sapthagiri thinks there should be a way for students to use their phones to communicate with their parents quickly and efficiently.
