Students relieve boredom, stay connected with social media challenges, games
April 14, 2020
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MHS, along with all other Texas schools, has closed its doors until May 4 at the earliest. Students are completing their school work through Google Classroom and all UIL events have been suspended possibly for this school year. The pandemic has changed the students’ way of life from how they celebrate their birthdays and how they spend their time.
“Some of my friends organized a little parade so they could see me and tell me happy birthday, which was a nice surprise,” soph. Kirbi Wilson said.
Other than how birthdays are different, in response to the extra time spent at home, social media platforms are bursting with challenges to defeat boredom. On just Instagram, there have been the “#10 beautiful women challenge,” the “see 10 do 10” challenge, the “see a goal, post a goal” challenge, and many others.
“My favorite part about the #10beautifulwomen challenge was getting to see others group together to support others, especially girls who sometimes struggle to see themselves in a positive light,” junior Elliana Carter said. “In our boredom, many things have come out of it, including many internet challenges and threads.
The best in my opinion are the ones who uplift others.”
Another popular internet trend at the moment are different BINGO games that relate to a specific school, quarantine, or church youth groups.
“I’ve done one for the class of ‘24 at DBU,” senior Haley Bass said. “I like getting to know people a little bit through the things they put on their bingos.”
However, some still do not have much time to spend on social media. Previously it was due to sports and school.
“I do not have more free time,” soph. Briley Bowen said. “I have been babysitting and working out trying to make up for all the time I am not doing soccer right now.”
