Assignment deadline switches from Sundays to Fridays

When MHS first moved to remote instruction on March 23, students’ assignments were originally due on Sundays by midnight. However, the assignment deadline changed to Fridays at noon (12 p.m.) effective April 24 and will continue for the remainder of the school year.

At first, the MHS leadership team thought they would release the weekly assignments by 8:00 a.m. on Mondays and give students the entire week to turn in their work. They wanted to be as flexible as possible since some students may have to watch younger siblings, or they may have to share a device and take turns doing their homework. Teachers soon discovered that quite a few students waited until the weekend to begin their weekly assignments and then would start emailing teachers for assistance. Staff members, in trying to maintain a “normal” schedule, have virtual office hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day; therefore, many were not responding to students’ questions over the weekend and those students had to complete and turn in their work without help.

The MHS leadership team hopes this change in the assignment due date will be beneficial for both students and teachers. All assignments will be now released on Friday afternoons and be due the following Friday by noon. Students will still have the same amount of days–one week–to turn in all their work.

If students choose to start working on assignments on Saturdays and Sundays and they email their teachers with questions, then the teachers will be able to reply on Monday morning and the student will still have time to complete the assignment with clarifications. If students need more assistance, they will still have the opportunity to attend virtual tutorials, as well.

The deadline change from Sundays to Fridays, which seems to be a win-win for both teachers and students, will last through the end of the year, May 28.
