Lady Cards dig into playoffs
November 3, 2020
As the Lady Cardinals’ volleyball season is nearing an end, they are hoping to “dig deep” into the playoffs. After finishing district in a second-place tie with Aubrey, the ladies defeated Uplift Summit on Oct. 29 to become bi-district champs for the 13th consecutive year. They defeated Alvarado on Nov. 3 for the area title, as well.
They will now face off Nov. 6 with district rival Aubrey for the fourth time this year for the regional quarterfinal title. Game details will be announced soon.
At the last home game of the season against Van Alstyne, the varsity senior volleyball players and their families were honored.
On Oct. 16, the girls recognized cancer survivors with a “Dig PINK” theme since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Some of the honorees included faculty members of Team Melissa: Devorah McPherson, teacher and coach; Roy Ehrlich, aide; and Rachel Nelson, CTE teacher and news/yearbook adviser.
One promising player for the varsity volleyball team Kenzie Segleski can’t hide her Cardinal pride.
“Volleyball has my heart, the game itself is always changing just like a person,” Segleski said. “And in the small moment of play the adrenaline gets the best of me, and strikes me to win even more.
“The fact that my coaches gave me the opportunity to be a part of varsity from the very beginning of my high school experience is an honor. I have had so many memories made from playing for you these past years. I will remember such moments for the rest of my life. Thank you!”
Another passionate young player, student and aspiring varsity hopeful Rayannne Jones also can’t hide her Cardinal pride.
“I love being a small part of a team that is made up of friends for life, and requires me to work hard for what the future may hold, and like everyone I fall in love with the rush that comes with the pride and joy of volleyball,” Jones said. “Because of the supportive coaches that push me to my limits, I am here today. I know what it is like to work hard to claim what I want, and I have learned to never give up on myself and abilities. For that I am so grateful.”
In the famous words of Henry Ford, “Coming together is the beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” The Lady Cards’ volleyball program under head coach Frank DePaolo seems to have found this magic formula.
Good luck and go, Lady Cards!
