Safe ways to celebrate Christmas

As many know, while the COVID vaccine is finally approved, many are taking this as a time to rejoice already. But it may be until late spring, early summer, or even next fall before everyone is vaccinated enough for us to return to normal activities. With cases rising around the world and across the country, many are hunkering down for the next couple of months to help flatten the curve of case rates.

The U.S. is currently experiencing a second wave of COVID after many ignored the warnings and traveled and gathered for Thanksgiving. Many who want to contribute to staying safe this holiday season may feel as if Christmas is ruined, but that is far from the truth.

While the holiday season is going to look different, this doesn’t mean it can’t still be a lot of fun. Celebrating Christmas may have to become more creative this year. Not being able to gather together makes many of us think outside the box for other ways to celebrate with our immediate family.

Here are 10 safe ways to celebrate Christmas with your family this year at home:

  1. Bake Christmas cookies–Even if you’re not a master baker, Christmas is the perfect time to try out something new. Whether you go for the classic sugar cookie or go for something more complex, there’s something for everyone.
  2. Decorate your house/room–What a better way to spend your time than decorating where you’re living! This is a great way to get into the holiday spirit.
  3. Watch Christmas movies–Freeform is continuing their 25 Days of Christmas along with most streaming services releasing their own flood of festive movies.
  4. Make Christmas ornaments–There are lots of different types of ornaments you can make, from simply filling empty bulbs to salt dough ornaments.
  5. Work on Christmas presents–whether simply wrapping the ones you have or making your own gifts, this extra time at home is a great opportunity.
  6. Drive around and look at Christmas lights–Whether you’re able to drive or not, this is a great family activity. Going to big neighborhoods is a fun way to see some elaborate displays.
  7. Make and listen to a Christmas playlist–Nothing puts someone in the Christmas mood quite like singing along to “Rocking around the Christmas Tree” or “Jingle Bells.”
  8. Make a gingerbread house–Whether you attempt to bake it from scratch or buy a kit, it is a great tradition that can easily become a competition if your family wants.
  9. Have a Christmas game night–Many of us grew up with family game nights, but as our lives grew busier they fell off. With this extra time at home, this is a great time to pick this tradition back up. Whether you stick to normal games, or branch out into holiday-themed ones, it’s a great option.
  10. Make Christmas cards–Christmas cards is a broad term. Whether it’s a family photo, or drawings, or a sweet handwritten note, it’s something special for this season. Many of us never “have the time” during the normal holiday season.
