‘Snowpocalypse’ turns into sunny spring break
March 2, 2021
On Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, Melissa and the rest of Texas faced a powerful winter storm named Uri that students and teachers are calling “Snowpocalypse” or “Snowmageddon.” Although many people love snow and enjoy playing in it, the wintry precipitation caused many families to lose power, food, water, warmth and, in extreme cases, the death of loved ones. While the storm caused many to panic, Texans can now look forward to a sunny spring.
For Melissa students, spring break will start on March 8-12. Students can look forward to a full week off from their studies and warm weather.
During this time off, students have to remember to stay safe during the pandemic while having fun. Even though Gov. Abbot announced on Texas Independence Day, March 2, that he is lifting the statewide mask mandate and allowing businesses to open at 100% capacity effective March 10, he is still strongly encouraging all of us to use common sense and be vigilante.
Although there might not seem to be a variety of options to make the spring break more fun while avoiding crowds and practicing social distancing, there are plenty of ways to keep busy while maintaining a safe environment for yourself and others around you. Students and teachers can use this time to hangout with family indoors. You can play board games, watch movies, and even learn new recipes.
If hanging out indoors doesn’t seem like the perfect day, there are many things you can do outside that is just the same amount of fun. You can go swimming at a pool or even a Texas lake. You can go fishing, camping, or even go to the movie theaters, malls, amusement parks or just lay outside on the grass. All these options can be safe as long as you are responsible and remember to stay six feet away from others not in your immediate family.
Students and teachers alike can put the memories of the unexpected winter break behind them and enjoy a stress-free spring break.
