Emily Chapman, a previous high school English teacher and dean, was promoted to Associate Principal this school year. Although she has a new role, she is still dean of the English department. Chapman has always focused her work on her students and the well-being of the school. Melissa Schools appointed Chapman as associate principal so that she can help improve the school’s environment. 

“When I first began my career in education, I wanted to make a difference in my students’ lives,” Chapman said. “That hasn’t changed, and I still want to make a difference for my students. While this might look different, I feel like I have the opportunity to impact the campus on a larger scale. It has been a joy to stretch myself into other contents and departments already.”

An associate principal’s role is to oversee daily school activities and the academic goals of the school. Chapman works closely with the other deans and coordinators of various departments to ensure they are meeting the needs of the students. 

This new role that was passed to Chapman coincides with challenging responsibilities and difficult situations. She is here to help other staff members and students.  

“I can support our teachers any time of the day without having to follow the rigid class schedule of a teacher,” Chapman said. “Every day brings something new and challenging in this role, so it’s never dull, and I enjoy the adventure! Though I often leave work feeling like I didn’t accomplish everything I wanted to, I feel like I get the opportunity to help others regularly, and that brings me great joy.” 

She will continue to work with the high school and identify areas that need improvement and help resolve issues that can help students achieve their goals. 

“I hope this will, in turn, impact our amazing students’ experience at Melissa High School,” Chapman said. “I know we have the best teachers and students, and I want to help squeeze out every ounce of potential from our campus.”
