The concept of “Eurovision” is coming to the United States with the new TV show “American Song Contest.”

The original concept, the Eurovision Song Contest, is an international song competition. However, as the name implies the show mainly has European contestants. The U.S. has never been involved, but there are nations outside of Europe participating. Each country sends an artist or band to represent their country. Italy was the winning nation in 2021 with the rock band Måneskin and the song “Zitti E Buoni.”

Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson are the hosts of the “American Song Contest.” The show airs every Monday from March 21 through May 9 on NBC. All 50 states and five U.S. territories will participate. Artists will represent their home states and try to make it all the way to the grand finale. All songs have to be written for the contest. The process to find America’s “Best Original Song” consists of qualifying rounds, semi-finals, and then the grand finale on May 9.

Representing the state of Texas is 19-year-old Grant Knoche with his song “Mr. Independent.”

Every state has a jury member who votes for the best participants in the qualifying rounds. In the finale, the winner is elected by fan votes and a jury. The points are given in a range from 1 through 8, 10, and 12 points in true Eurovision spirit. The winning song is the one with the most points.
