Quarterback Dwayne Haskins passed away Saturday morning, April 9, after being struck by a dump truck while crossing a highway on foot in South Florida. Haskins was a promising up and coming player in the National Football League (NFL). Dwayne had an amazing start in college with the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2016-2018. He rewrote school records along the way.

Haskins had arguably the greatest passing season in school history in 2018, his lone season as a starter, when he threw for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Championship and victory in the Rose Bowl. Haskins was even in the running for the Heisman Trophy against Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray. Unfortunately, he lost to Murray. Even though he didn’t get the Heisman, he was still recognized for his feats with the Buckeyes. He then proceeded to forgo his next two years of college and enter the NFL draft and was a first round pick by the Washington Commanders.

After two years with Washington, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a second chance and possible starting job after the retirement of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Many of his peers shared their support to the Haskins family after learning the breaking news of his death.

“The meaningful touches and impact Dwayne made as a husband, son, brother, teammate and friend is a timeless treasure imbued in our hearts,” his wife Kalabrya Haskins said. “I am truly grateful to everyone who has been by our side as we mourn his untimely passing. Our family implores for your continued prayers, yet continued respectful privacy as we painfully grieve,”

There is currently no information on his autopsy or details containing why he was crossing the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic.
