Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Movie Review
January 19, 2017
On Dec. 16 of 2016, Rouge One: A Star Wars Story entered theaters around the country, and was met with generally positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave Rouge One an 85 percent rating out of 100. IMBD gave Rouge One a 8.1 out of 10. I’m here to give you my opinion on Star Wars: Episode 3.5. Warning, spoilers for Rouge One: A Star Wars Story are in this article. Continue at your own risk.
Our movie starts showing the main protagonist Jyn Erso as a young girl on the planet Vaullt, and how she became an orphan, losing her mother and father to the Empire. The movie then shows Jyn escaping imperial soldiers, until she is taken in by Saw Gerrera. Then the movie skips 20 years into the future and shows Jyn in an imperial labor camp. Personally, I do NOT like this pass in time so early in the movie. In the audience, I was totally confused as to what the heck was going on. When Jyn is suddenly saved by the Rebel alliance and the movie is thrown into a whole new direction. Now, Jyn has to save, contact or kill, her father (the true intentions of the Rebel alliance is never really made clear). This confusing mission, led by captain Cassian Andor, is a success(?) when Galen Erso dies after the Rebel alliance BOMBS THE ENTIRE IMPERIAL ENGINEERING COMPOUND. If the Rebel alliance has that much firepower, why don’t they just randomly bomb other imperial stations until the Empire is crippled? After the Rebels return to base, there’s a boring meeting, yadda yadda yadda, meeting stuff, get the plans, blah blah blah that sort of thing. So a team of basically the Space Suicide Squad, goes to the Imperial planet with the plans, and light the place up. This is by far the best part of the movie. We sat through an hour of boring exposition, and finally we get the action that we have been waiting for, and against all odds, the rebels have sent the plans to Princess Leia, and the rebels have “A New Hope.” And because it’s a standalone movie, they have to nuke everybody at the end. What else could they do?
That’s about all I have to say about this movie. A tolerable exposition, and an action packed ending. I am seriously looking forward to Episode VIII, and hoping the J.J. Abrams can continue the magic.
