Letter from the Editor: Dear Mr. President

Ty Graham, Editor

The 2016 presidential election was unusual to say the least, and now the United States will have a president unlike any other in history. The results of the last election were made permanent this past Friday, with the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States. People have expressed concern about his ability, or credibility to lead this nation. Athletes, pop stars, and even members of his own party took to social media to describe negative feelings towards President Trump during the campaign season. He is undoubtedly the most polarizing figure on the campaign trail, on either side of the aisle, so he also has the potential to draw negative attention on himself. As a result of negative feelings that he has accumulated since the primaries, President Trump goes into office with a very low approval rating. He also does not have the wave of excitement as our previous president did during his first term.

However, America’s perceived lack of support for number 45 is nearly irrelevant, President Trump is now America’s president. So, like him or hate him, he is your president. Rooting for his demise is similar to wishing for the failure of your designated driver. It may be quite fun because you are overcome with emotion, but it will ultimately hurt you and your best interests. In the name of maintaining our nation’s best interests, I have decided to support President Trump, if only for the fact that he is our president.

Dear Mr. President, you have proven that you are can lead incredibly successful businesses, now it’s time to prove that you can lead a successful nation. While many tactics do transfer from business to politics, reputation and track record are not so fluid. You have no government experience, you have never served in the military and you have never held a political office. As a result of this, we have no precedent for your values and beliefs because you have never been asked to make the monumental decisions that will be required from you while you sit in the Oval Office. You probably have a lot on your plate, so I have compiled a list of things you should know going into 2017.

Dear Mr. President, you were elected to office, so your campaign promises must have resonated with voters. Because you had a lot to say during your campaign, I ask that you are willing to stick to your guns during your presidency. You said that you were going to defund Planned Parenthood while still caring for the rights of women. I do hope that you are able to find a happy medium where women are cared for and loved without the government financing the abortions of babies across America. People also have the right to love who they love, do not tell them who they can and cannot have feelings for. Please do not take any threats on the United States lightly. America is in the crosshairs of many terrorist organizations, and you need to be willing to take action to protect our country. You will likely have the chance to appoint several supreme court justices, please pick those who love America and are committed to upholding her best interests.

Dear Mr. President, the antics that made The Apprentice popular will not fly now that you sit at the Resolute Desk. Mr. President, you are the United States Government. Your every move will be watched and your every action will be recorded in history books. The day will come when you are flying out of the White House on Executive One and you will no longer be at the helm. Sink or swim, you are now the captain. Please steer carefully.
