The fall season has begun and the Cards are ready to soar into their upcoming games. Now that the school has moved into the UIL Conference 5A Division 2 classification, their opponents will be very different from last year’s season.

To get ready for the fall season, the varsity team engaged with playing a couple of scrimmages. A scrimmage is basically a practice game that helps players identify what moves and skills work for them, and how they can use such knowledge in a real time game. These scrimmages prepared players for the many games to come in the future.

The Cardinals had their first game of the season August 26 in Argyle. The team faced off against the Eagles, their long-time rival, who they shut out last year with a score of 21-0. Unfortunately, the Cardinals lost this year’s game with a score of 37-18, leaving them with a 0-1 record.

“I think we started off good but got a little down on ourselves with little mistakes we were making and Argyle took advantage of that and won,” junior Nigel Smith, a team captain, said.

The second game of the season was on Sept. 2 against the China Spring Cougars, who won the 2021 4A Division 2 State Championship. The home game resulted in a fierce neck-to-neck battle ending in a one point difference. Though the Cards played well and hard, the game ended in China Spring’s favor with a score of 42-41.

“China Spring showed us that we need to keep pushing for the actual goal–State Champs!” junior Bishop Curry said.

Their most recent game was against the Royse City Bulldogs. The away game in Royse City concluded in a miraculous win for the Cardinals. The ending score was 48-24, and this was the Cards first winning game this season.

“I feel like we came together as a team fully for the first time,” junior Jason Anunobi said. “The whole week we talked about effort, and if we just gave 10% more, it would help us to get a little better and finish the job. After the China Spring’s game, we really felt like we let one go so the goal for this week was to keep our focus.”

Friday night the varsity team will face off against Crandall on their home turf, hoping to improve their season record to 2-2.
