Cardinal Update

  • PLAYOFF T-SHIRTS: Anyone wanting to purchase a t-shirt for the varsity girls basketball playoffs, click HERE. The deadline to order is 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
  • FAFSA NIGHT: MHS will host a FAFSA Night on Feb. 5 from 6-8 p.m. in the student union. According to House Bill 3, every senior must complete either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or a state-mandated Opt Out form in order to graduate. Click here to learn more.  Students needing an opt-out form must pick one up from their counselor’s office.
  • CHEER TRYOUTS: The cheerleading tryout clinic will be held at the sixth grade center gym from 4:30-6:30, Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 5-7. Tryouts will be held starting at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8. Material videos can be viewed on the MHS Cheerleading page on our website.
  • BENCHMARK TESTING: English I & English II EOC benchmark tests will be administered on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and Thursday, Feb. 8.
  • PARTNERS FOR PE: Rising 10th-12th graders interested in applying for Partners for PE can complete this application by Friday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m.
  • PALS: Rising 11th and 12th graders interested in being part of the Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALS) program next school year can complete this application by Friday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m. Students must also have a teacher recommendation.
  • TEAM BEHIND THE TEAM AWARD: Our student athletic trainers (part of our CTE program) have been nominated for Dave Campbell’s North Texas Team Behind the Team Award. Click here to VOTE for our student trainers. Voting closes February 19th.
  • CLASS OF 2024: Seniors should check their email daily and visit the “Seniors” web page often to make sure they don’t miss any important info!
  • DRIVER’S ED: Sign ups are now available in the main office for Driver’s Ed. The next class begins Feb. 15.
  • LETTER JACKETS: Fittings for letter jackets will take place on Monday, March 25, during Mega Lunch. If students believe they qualify for a jacket, they should speak to their coach so the coach can submit their names.
  • IB PROGRAM: In the fall of 2025, current freshmen will have the opportunity to begin the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. This challenging and comprehensive program places an emphasis on critical thinking, research skills, and international-mindedness. IB emphasizes 10 essential learner profiles, fostering traits such as inquisitiveness, open-mindedness, and principled behavior. Students will  develop qualities like communication skills, critical thinking, and a commitment to global citizenship, preparing them for a dynamic and interconnected world. The program strives to nurture well-rounded individuals who not only excel academically but also embody the values necessary for lifelong success. More info is coming soon!

Miranda Sirota is a senior this year at Melissa High School. This is her third year writing for the Cardinal Connection. Miranda is also involved in other extracurriculars including Band, HOSA, NHS, academic UIL, and Book Club. Outside of school, she enjoys reading, cooking, and binge-watching her favorite TV shows. After graduating, Miranda plans to study Dental Hygiene to become a registered hygienist.
