Cardinal Wrestling dominates at all levels of competition

The varsity boys team wins the regional championship.

The boys and girls wrestling teams traveled to the Berry Center in Austin on Feb. 16-17 to compete in the 5A UIL State Wrestling Tournament.

The boys team was named state runner-up with 93.50 points. Junior Jadyn Johnson earned the title of state champion in the 150-pound weight class, senior Angelo Ferrari was named state champion in the 175-pound class, senior Mercer Ashley placed 6th in the 157 weight class, freshmen Gage Herrin placed 5th in the 165 weight class and Gunner Morris placed 6th on the 132 weight class.

On the girls side, junior Akeelah Moore was the runner up in the 114 pound weight class.

Leading up to this weekend, both teams finished strong in both the district tournament on Jan. 31 at McKinney North High School and the regional tournament on Feb. 9-10 at Anna High School.

At the district tournament, six girls qualified for regionals, placing third as a team.

  • Freshmen: Moore placed first in the 114 weight class, Malia Griffin placed first in the 126 weight class and Mary Griffin placed first in the 107 weight class.
  • Sophomores: Teylar Fetty placed third in the 132 weight class, Tessa Tighe placed fourth in the 144 weight class and Khadijah Kamara placed fourth in the 185 weight class.

At the regional tournament, three girls qualified for state, placing fourth as a team out of 52 teams.

Moore placed first in the 114 weight class, Malia Griffin placed third in the 126 weight class and Mary Griffin placed first in the 107 weight class.

The varsity boys team won first place at both the district and regional tournaments. They qualified 11 boys for state. Listed below are their regional placements:

  • Seniors: Alex Ruiz placed fourth in the 285 weight class, Ferrari placed first in the 175 weight class, Mercer Ashley placed first in the 157 weight class, Dexter Gabrillo placed third in the 138, Gunner Morris placed first in the 132 weight class and Noah Thorsen placed first in the 120 weight class.
  • Juniors: Ali Vinson placed second in the 215 weight class and Johnson placed first in the 150 weight class.
  • Sophomores: Gunner Lund placed second in the 144 weight class and Eli Bryan placed fifth in the 113 weight class.
  • Freshman: Gage Herrin placed first in the 165 weight class.
