Art students pose with their awards from the regional VASE competition held in February in Frisco. Two students, AnaBelle Gonzales and Logan Venner, advanced to the state level of competition.

Ten art students competed at the regional Texas High School Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) in Frisco on Feb. 24. Two of those students are now moving on to the state competition, which will be held April 27 at San Marcos High School.

VASE began three decades ago with its first event consisting of just over 400 student entries. Today, those entries number around 35,000. Students create artworks, write about their creative processes, their understanding of visual art, and interview with a judge about their piece.

The 10 students that participated in the regional event were Genevieve Harry, Riley Hefel, Logan Venner, Shanza Shaharyar, Addison Bellue, AnaBelle Gonzales, Yacouba Ouologuem, Dylan Wilson, Crischa Tuscano and Sophia Helton. ALL students achieved the highest rating an artist can get at regionals, which is a rating of a 4. This was a first for Melissa High School.

AnaBelle Gonzales and Logan Venner were selected to continue on to the state competition. At State, they will undergo another round of judging.
