The varsity soccer team worked to kick off the season right. A home tournament ended up short with the weather but players said they preserved with a tie.  They play Sat. Feb. 16 at 7p.m.

Two weekends ago the girls participated in a tournament in Denison. After 4 games of nothing but hard work and teamwork, the girls won the tournament with a shutout against all 4 teams. The leading scorer being Lucy Hurst. It was not only a great way to start off the season, but it bought the girls closer together as a team

“I think the win in Dension bought us a lot closer and helped us to put trust in each other,” freshman Lucy Hurst said, “most of us have never played with each other so to come together as almost strangers and win really says something about our team.”

On Thursday night the girls played their first game in the Highway 5 Invitational tournament against one of their biggest competitors, Argyle. After 70 minutes of fierce battle, the two teams tied 0-0. Even though the girls didn’t win they still came out on top because they haven’t been scored on all season. Credit for this goes to their two goalies, Brittany Morgan and Anna Blankenship, and the defensive line: Grace Tegerdine, Jenna Newkirk, Jenna Daniel, and Abby Dellaire.

“I think the reason we haven’t been scored on all season is that of our defensive line and of course our

amazing goalies,” said freshman Cali Tenney, “we all work really hard during practice and it pays off during 

games.”

Going into the future the girls are excited about what is to come. Recently, the team went to Harry McKillop Elementary School for their annual “Player for the Day” celebration. The player for the day celebration is very special in Melissa. The team will start the day off by traveling to an elementary school and opening doors for kids. Then, when the school day starts, the team will go to the classroom of the student who won the raffle.

The team will spend the day with the winning student and their fellow classmates. The winning student gets an honorary jersey, a team shirt, and they get to be captain of the team for that night. This year’s winning student was Janna Smith.

“I had a lot of fun with the team and I liked being the boss,” said eight-year-old

Janna, “I also liked doing the cheer with them and yelling on the bench.”

The girls said they have ” already done such amazing things this year and the season has just started.” But look forward to the what is coming ahead.  

Boys soccer is working to get their kicks in co-captain Chris Perez said.  The boy’s team is working on improving their season.
