The powerlifting team experienced a lot of success this year. Two girls and two boys advanced to the state meet in their weight classes.

The Lady Cardinals took nine athletes to the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s (THSWPA) Region 6, Division 2 meet held in Gainesville on March 5. Junior Raegan Knight and senior Ella Branson qualified for state. This was the most females that MHS has ever had make it to this level.

Raegan finished in second place in the 123-pound weight class. She lifted a total of 725 pounds (260 squat, 185 bench press, 280 deadlift).

Ella also competed in the 123-pound weight class and also lifted 725 pounds. She finished in third place. Her totals were 285 in squat, 170 on bench press, and 270 on deadlift.

Krista Smith placed third in the 132-pound weight class, Katelynn Wagner finished fourth in the 105 class, and Brianna McGee, fifth, in the 148 class. Click to view the complete THSWPA Region 6, Division 2 results.

Making his debut in Cardinal powerlifting, freshman Peyton Knight advanced to state along with junior Dax Ogden. The boys also had nine athletes compete in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s (THSPA) Region 6, Division 2 meet held on March 10 at Kennedale High School.

Peyton finished in second place in his 123-pound weight class with a total of 975 pounds (390 squat, 225 bench press, 360 deadlift).

Dax competed in the 198-pound weight class and also finished in second place with a total weight of 1,285 pounds (510 squat, 300 bench press, 475 deadlift).

Justin Mays barely missed state with a third place finish in the 220 weight class, and Brandon Ward placed fourth in the SHW class. Overall, the Cardinals placed fifth out of 23 teams. Click to view the complete THSPA Region 6, Division 2 results.
