Grease is the Word
Melissa High School Presents First Musical
October 31, 2016
Melissa High School’s theatre department will put on their very first musical, Grease. This show will open Nov. 2 in the black box. With this being the first musical, all eyes are on directors, Megan Moore and Kyle Brenner, and the cast not to disappoint. Megan Moore, Melissa High School’s theatre director, states, “I knew presenting a large scale musical would be one of the best ways to grow the program and showoff our incredibly talented students. There are so many elements that go into a major production like Grease. It has been a huge undertaking, but I have seen the entire Melissa Theatre department grow and thrive throughout the process.”
Not only is Melissa’s first musical a huge step, they are performing a beloved classic, Grease. Grease is a teen romance based in the 50s, and it has captured the hearts of all ages. You will find everyone’s favorite songs including, Summer Lovin, We Go Together and Greased Lightning.
Some may say that this show displays inappropriate themes, however, the theatre department has taken cautious measures to make this show family friendly while keeping the same story lines. Molly Kennedy, starring as lead role Sandy, states, “It is very cleaned up from the movie, but we still allude to some more adult themes without flat out saying it.” Since the show will be performed in the black box, you will feel as though you were in the show dancing and singing along with the cast. To see this show, tickets can be purchased for $15 each through Megan Moore or any of the cast members. Their performance dates include Nov. 3, 12, 13, 15 and 18. Kennedy states, “The show is going to be really good. I can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on!”

After having attended this play, I was completely blown away by the talent of each and every cast member. I know for a fact I would not be able to do something to this level in front of so many people. I felt like I was at an actual professional play and was impressed the entire time. I laughed when the actors made jokes and even got frustrated with them as well. It felt like I was actually there and this led me to having to refrain from jumping in the spotlight with the crew. As soon as it was over I wanted to rewind and watch the entire show again. This having been my first time attending a school theatre performance was definitely a great first impression.

I attended Grease, the musical, last Sunday. It was an amazing show! Everyone was so great. I liked going to a musical within my own school because I knew most of the people who were participating. It is fun to see how their personalities match up with the character given. I also enjoyed watching a play in the black box. It was so up close and personal, it feels like you are a part of the play. With it being so intimate, there is never a point where you get distracted or dose off. I loved the musical and I recommend it highly.

I attended the evening performance of Grease on November 13th and I was completely blown away by the amazing skills of the actors and actresses. Their voices were amazing, the acting was great, and the show was adorable and hilarious. I was so impressed with everyone’s performance. Being a student watching other fellow students perform is interesting because I know at least a little bit about all of the cast member’s personalities in real life. I couldn’t help but laugh when watching Rizzo (Julia Giannelli) and Sandy (Molly Kennedy) cat fight because of their personalities and their friendship in real life. Everyone played their part really well.
Overall, I really loved the show and would pay to see it again (if there’s any tickets left, that is).

I watched the theater’s rehearsal of Grease last week and loved it! Everyone did a great job singing and acting. I hope lots of people get the chance to see the performance!
