Freshman medals in state computer applications

Freshman Tyler Mathieson competed in Computer Applications at the 4A Academic UIL State Meet on May 1, and he finished in second place overall.

With the ongoing pandemic, rather than having one big meet at the University of Texas in Austin, the state contest was divided into “hubs” based on the regional educational service centers. Therefore, the MHS contestants and coach Doug Bingman did not have to travel far for state this year. The competition was held at nearby Princeton High School. The students gathered in person for the event, and then some of the coaches from all around the state gathered virtually to grade the entries.

Junior Daria (Dasha) Stepanova also qualified for state, but, unfortunately, she did not finish in the top six.

Computer Applications is a challenging event in which students demonstrate their mastery of spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel) and databases (Microsoft Access)–all in a 30-minute timeframe.
