Annual food drive gets underway to help community

Starting Nov. 8-18, MHS will be hosting its annual canned food drive, and students donating canned goods can drop off the cans each morning in the Student Union. The canned food drive is sponsored by Interact Club, National Honor Society (NHS), and Student Council (STUCO). There will be a competition between the four grades for the Cardinal Spirit Challenge over which grade can donate the most cans. The grade that donates the most will get 10 points and second place will receive five points.

“We have 60 families that need to be fed,” ASL teacher Christina Pinckney said. “We are trying to get enough cans that can feed more than 60 families. I would love a minimum of five cans per person to donate, but donating more would be amazing.”

Foods that are recommended to donate include canned vegetables and fruit, soup, cereal, canned tuna, mac and cheese, and rice. The donated items will be given to families that can’t afford food.

“Hopefully, vegetables and beans will be donated the most because they are easily made,” Pinckney said. “Foods like macaroni and cheese require dairy products, and we don’t know if any of the 60 families have access to dairy.”

Every year, clubs like Interact, NHS, and STUCO participate in programs such as food and clothing drives for service hours and help those in need.

“We normally do food drives once a year, but we will also be doing other service projects this year,” Pinckney said.
